Nonprofit Organization Intern Onboarding

The Shenandoah Film Collaborative is a nonprofit that promotes independent cinema and film education. They have an active intern program and welcome several interns each quarter to help organize film festivals, generate blog content, and promote their mission. As an all-volunteer organization, meeting time is precious, and the board wanted to find ways to streamline the onboarding process for new interns. In spring of 2021, they converted part of their onboarding materials to e-learning modules. With this change, they were able to better equip interns to hit the ground running as well as free up valuable meeting time to discuss big-picture goals for the quarter.

This e-learning module outlines the film analyst interns’ role and responsibilities and reinforces communication best practices. It was designed using the Shenandoah Film Collaborative’s branding guidelines so that the look and feel mirrors other onboarding modules. As with many new initiatives, the design and development schedule was compressed in order to have the module ready for the new slate of interns. I worked with programming department SME to identify essential knowledge and skills and then developed the module on a short schedule.
